  10. Don Baarns provides the best blog I've come across for the subculture of salsa. Baarns does a great service to our dance community. His blog covers everything from dance lessons, technique and tips, etiquette, general reviews of what is to be expected from clubs, bands, djs, dance instructors and events. He teaches musicality and makes the world of salsa understandable to any new comer as well as gives insight to the seasoned dancer. It is a social commentary on the my genre of dance so it resonates with me, however it would be interesting to anyone who loves music and dance. It's one of the few blogs I follow.

  31. Don!
Most people in my industry of dance-teachers and dance-promoters feel it's best to stay neutral and find a way to appreciate what everyone has to offer...
But not me! I play favorites.
There are a few teachers out there (as well as promoters and DJs, etc.) that I simply believe are better than the others. While I'd never badmouth anyone (directly), I am unabashed about declaring my favorites.

When it comes to the arena of Music you are my go-to guy.
BTW, Another thing to keep in mind is that I have ridiculously high standards for what a student should be able to get from a class or teacher; and this, makes me a full on Hater!
But I want to say, in no uncertain terms, Don, you are the best "Musicality teacher" I've ever known.
I support what you're doing and can't wait to see what I can learn from you!!

  44. Don's ability to understand and articulate the importance of musicality in dance is incomparable. So many times only the technical aspect of physical movement is considered in dance blogs..THANK YOU for shedding light on the most important reason for what makes us dance...THE MUSIC!!! (also, by understanding the music..we find the understanding of the dance/movement behind the rhythms...to execute it with correct technique, emotion and culture) Bravo on this blog!!!!

  57. Don's blog is a great resource. From a first post back in 2007 I can see, the blog showed the best time to start learning to dance is now. From an unlikely salsero background, an adult dance beginner with a musical background, Don's journey has over years got to dancing regularly, teaching in LA, and helping others around the world through his blog.
And those posts from back then are still relevant as new dancers get the opportunity to learn from them. (I'm trying not to get sidetracked whist writing this with rereading the posts from 2007!). Learning dance, learning, learning about music. More than a dozen posts on musicality, with videos too? Not many places you get that.

Don's chosen dance might be salsa, but these posts really do help many styles of dancer, and at many levels.

What makes a great blog? In the teacher talk category - educating, helping train & instruct dancers. And this blog does that. Happy to see Don in the Top Dance Blog Contest. The blog is one of those resources that i'd heartily recommend to a dancer who's showing signs of wanting to learn - in general, and with relation to specific posts time and time again. Many dance teachers may not necessarily ever point out resources like Don's blog to their students, so it's great to hope people talk about the blog to others, share it, and learn from it.

    Thank you Don.
